In Zambia, a simple yet bright idea helps elephants & locals live in mutual peace.

Elephant herds crossing over farmland and pastures, and hotels and resorts in the wild,  is an ongoing problem in Africa. A unique solution seems to have been recently discovered in Zambia and Kenya — solar powered LED lights.

It was found that if small flashing lights were fixed on trees or poles in a line about 25 meters apart, elephants would not cross what to them would look like a boundary. In Kenya this seems to work with Lions as well, which is quite a relief for the locals, as you can imagine.

The lights, imported from the US, are solar powered. The units are being nailed to trees and electricity poles whever animal encroachment is a problem.
